Many people have asked me if my portraits are pictures, illustrations or computer generated images, and what kind of process/software I use to make them. Some people even told me I don't have to explain it or share the way I work if I prefer to keep it secret. I must say I never really understood artists' secrecy, I don't have any problems at all to share and explain how I make my portraits. All of them are created in Photoshop using a real picture of the artist and a picture of one of their characters. The whole process of fusing the person with the character is completely done in Photoshop, I don't use any other software.

The first step is always choosing the character for the photocomposition, so that the artist can copy the posture in the photo, otherwise the digital integration is impossible. Then I take pictures of the artist, and pictures of the painting/illustration/sculpture in the same place, with the same light, using the same camera. Even when I use a vector design or a 3D image that could be easily sent by email, I always take pictures of it with my camera. Like this the final composition works fine without having to make so many adjustments, this is my little secret. ;) Then the photoshopping starts, I actually spend more time retouching the image than capturing it. The shooting is normally done in one afternoon with the artist, and is usually over in one or two hours, but then I spend days in Photoshop modifying the photo.

Another essential thing for me is taking the photos in RAW format, to be able to make light and color adjustments without losing quality. Below you can see some images of the original pieces made by the artists, pictures of me taking pictures :), screenshots of the work in progress, and the final portrait, as a graphical explanation of the process.
