Symbiosis at MIAU Revisited!
Updating the exhibition with new mutant artists portraits (and a lot more!)

Two years after setting up the Symbiosis show at MIAU Fanzara, I was asked by the organisers to move the exhibition to one of the rooms to free some space for a collective show with pieces from all the artists who painted the town during the four years of the festival.

Originally, the Symbiosis show was divided in two rooms with plenty of space, so I had to make a selection of the photos I wanted to keep to fit them all in a single room. And I also wanted to add some new portraits to the show: Animalito Land, Isaac Mahow, and Borondo. These three photos were perfect for the exhibition because they were taken in Fanzara in previous editions of the festival, and the characters used for the digital surgery were from the murals the artists painted in town. The exhibition included only portraits of artists who had painted walls in Fanzara, but these three were even better, because they were actually created using the murals they painted in town.

Besides these three photos of artists captured in Fanzara,I also wanted to add the portrait of the rural hero from the High Lands of Northern Spain Sr Arribas, and the Queen of pixel style Bubbles. These pictures were not taken in Fanzara, but both artists had been invited to the festival this year.

After four years of MIAU, the little village is running out of walls, so the organisers invited some sculptors and land artists who could install their pieces of art without using any walls. Sr Arribas was the perfect choice for this, as he is used to create his own sculptures, and install them in the most remote rural locations without any help.

Bubbles, the game designer and pixel artist, made a tribute wall called Cosmic Juan, in memory of a local resident who developed a very special relationship with the festival organisers and artists during the previous years. He was a very peculiar character who liked beer, party, and art in all its forms, who died a few months before the fourth edition of the festival. So Bubbles, with the invaluable help of Hombrelópez, created a pixel portrait of Juan floating in the cosmos on the wall of the village bar, the place where he would have liked to be forever. López, the DIY master, made some 3D pixels on wood that came out of the wall, as if the parallel universe where Juan is now was invading our reality through a Matrix glitch. I also helped a little bit to create the cosmic background, a black hole through which you can actually see another dimension of reality. I must say it was really fun to paint this mural with my friends after such a long time without painting, I devote most of my time to photo-retouching and indoors calligraphy lately, so painting an outdoors mural was really nice for a change. The reaction from Juan's friends and family was totally fantastic and overwhelming, making this tribute was a fabulous experience.

So, coming back to the Symbiosis exhibition, adding these five new portraits and moving all of the photos to only one room was not possible without removing some of them. As I don't like to leave people out, I devised a cunning plan to include all of my digitally-modified portraits in a single room: I included only the vertical photos in large format, which take up less space; and placed all the horizontal ones in the same wall printed on paper in a smaller size using magnets. Like this there was room for everyone! We also painted the walls black, and used some golden vinyl for the names, and it came out great. I just love gold letters on a black background for some reason, probably you had already realised this. : )

Below you can see some pictures of the exhibition and the amazing pieces by Sr Arribas & Bubbles+López. As always, collaborating with the MIAU team has been a great pleasure. No work is too hard when you get the support of a good team of people!

Finally, for all the people who couldn't come to the MIAU festival or live far far away, here's a little walk-through video of the exhibition, it's nearly like being there! :)

Thanks to Montana Colors for the sprays, to TURIA for the beers (essential for organising any kind of festival in Spain in summer), and to Hombrelópez, Javi, Rafa, Ana and all the beautiful people from Fanzara for making all this possible and for treating us like family!
